Improving Cross-track Scanning Radiometers’ Precipitation Retrieval over Ocean by Morphing

Abstract Previous studies showed that conical scanning radiometers greatly outperform cross-track for precipitation retrieval over ocean. This study demonstrates a novel approach to improve rates at the radiometers’ observation time by propagating retrievals time. The improved rate is weighted average of original and propagated from radiometer. include Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) onboard NPP satellite four Humidity Sounders (MHSs). Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) three Special Sensor Imager/Sounders (SSMISs), while Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Imager (GMI) are taken as reference. Results show morphed agree much better with degree improvement depends on several factors, including source, interval between radiometer radiometer, type (convective vs. stratiform), events’ size, geolocation. has potential high-impact weather systems monitoring (e.g., hurricanes) multi-satellite products. It may also enhance usefulness future missions onboard.
